Many of Koud software developers have a background in gaming, and in January we once again participated in the Finnish Game Jam event at Tampere site. The atmosphere in our office was, as usual, relaxed, filled with laughter and ideas.
Koud’s participation in the game jams began for the first time in 2023, with the theme “Roots”. Together, we created a platformer game in Unity called Syöksysiemen. In the game, the player takes on the role of an oak tree and the goal is to reach ever higher levels by shooting seeds from the tree, which then grow into new trees. The player progresses while the tree leaves roots behind, marking its original starting point. The game features a calming narrative with facts about trees and their life. The sound design of Syöksysiemen even earned one of the jam awards!
In 2024, the theme was “Make Me Laugh”, and we approached it from a darkly humorous angle, where a small fluffy dog transforms into a problem solver for modern society’s “issues”. The game uses simple WASD/arrow key controls and was created in Unity. In this game, traditional hand-painted and drawn art combines with computer-generated graphics. Meanwhile, one of our employees also developed a board game about global leadership, which everyone could test during the jam.
